Brainspotting en het brein.
Brainspotting is a therapeutic method that uses the visual field to process and ultimately release sources of emotional and physical pain, trauma, dissociation, and other complex symptoms. It is an individual form of therapy that emerged from EMDR in 2003.
The ‘discoverer’ of brainspotting is David Grand, who during an EMDR session with a professional figure skater, he noticed that her eyes twitched when she looked at one point. He later called such a place the ‘brain spot’. David Grand held his finger exactly on that spot, and suddenly all kinds of forgotten memories came back to the woman. The next day she felt a lot better; her figure skating sessions were effortless. She had processed something.
Traumas and memories are stored in your body and brain. By looking at specific points you can activate and process this. The emphasis during a session is not so much on thinking and talking, but more on achieving a neurophysiological response. This makes the therapy suitable for rational people or people who do not like to talk.
During Brainspotting, memories and old pains come up in your emotional brain to be processed. This processing is partly possible due to the power of the empathetic therapeutic relationship.
Brainspotting is effective for physical and psychological disorders. Brainspotting can also be used to improve physical and mental performance and to strengthen resources such as soothing feelings or pleasant emotions.
Brainspotting is suitable for all ages. It is a method of treatment that can be integrated into and combined with other psychotherapeutic and physical treatment methods.
Brainspotting is a good choice when you have difficulty expressing your problems, or when you suffer from emotions whose origins you do not (yet) understand.
